In “The Scarlet Ibis,” the narrator states, "Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death." What do you think this this means? The quote means that pride can be good in some ways, but too much of it can be so bad that it could even cause death, such as in "The Scarlet Ibis". I find this statement to be true outside of the context of the story in my life. Being too proud of things like grades can be bad. If you get too used to getting good grades, you might not even study and possibly could bomb the next test/quiz. On the other hand, being proud of yourself is good because you can have the self-confidence to speak out and be special.

The quote implies that pride could have either a positive or negative effect. The magnitude of the effect can depend on the situation and can be as harmful as death itself. One example that can be found in text is in "The Scarlet Ibis" where pride led to the death of Doodle. In the modern world, one could have so much pride that they may have a job interview, and he/she feels like they are an automatic shoe-in. In reality, because of their over abundance of pride, they could be unprepared and will most likely not get the job.- Shiv Pandya 1st period

The quote is stating how pride can either be virulent like in "The Scarlet Ibis" or a blessing that can help you in life. It's like a double-edged sword that throws you into a gamble of life or death: whether it affects you positively or negatively all depends on the situation(like Shiv said) and how you control it within yourself. I definitely believe that this statement holds true in reality. People everyday are involving pride in their decisions, usually without even realizing that they are. Take for instance, a person that's not all that rich and wants to buy a new car because he won the lottery or something of the sort. His friends all have expensive, cool cars, but even with the lottery money he knows he'll go practically bankrupt if he buys a car like his buddies, but he'll do it anyways because his pride will make him feel ashamed if he didn't. He couldn't bear to look bad in front of his friends and drive around in something that would look like a hunk of junk when compared to other cars. On the other hand, pride can be good. Like Kevin Jin said, if used correctly, it can build self-confidence and make you feel good about yourself.

This quote means that pride can be good or bad, depending on how one uses pride. If one chooses to use pride in a good way, it could benefit them, helping them see brighter things in life. However, if used too much, pride can ruin a person's life, like in the Scarlet Ibis, where Doodle dies. The quote is associated in many aspects of life. The pride one feels after accomplishing something is great, helping one strive to be their best. However, if this pride is taken too far, one may feel like they are above others, which can cause a lost job, or lost friends.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said. Your example with the man winning the lottery and buying a car was an unique and wonderful example. I love how you stated so clearly how the man's pride can ruin his life, even after gaining so much money from a lottery win. There are many people on earth struggling to get by, because of their past of lavishly spending on objects that they didn't need, feeling the need to look "good" in front of friends and family, caused by their pride.
I think the quote means that too much pride or too little pride will prevent a person from living their life. pride can be good, but to have too much can be dangerous, which is shown by the death of Doodle in "the Scarlet Ibis." Doodle's brother's pride indirectly caused the death. He was too proud to allow his little, crippled brother's setbacks to mean anything. he ignored the obvious signs and kept pushing Doodle towards the goal, a goal that left his little brother sick and weak. His pride was what made him keep running instead of waiting for his little brother on the day that Doodle died. I think that the statement could be true out of context, but rarely in such an extreme way. In our modern world, pride is shown in people who refuse to cry even though they want to, pride is in those who refuse to give up. A lot of times this is a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing. Pride may cause people to keep pushing themselves, despite their physical limitations. Our pride might not allow us to back down when it is necessary in order to avoid conflict. these are little things in comparison to what happened in, "The Scarlet Ibis," but I think it's the same idea.

@ Kevin Zhang
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the double-edged sword and the gamble. i think that's a really good way to describe pride. It makes it easier to think about it. I dont really know you, but good job :)
The way the saying is written pride is described as "wonderful and terrible", "two vines", and "life and death", pride is always being shown as two things, typically one good and one bad showing that pride, as people have already said, has two sides.
ReplyDeleteThat statement I definitely find true in real life, for example my track meet. Minutes before the race we were all stressed and worried, then came this man and told us "You will all do fine, you have practiced haven't you? You have to be a little cocky, be proud of what you have done." Lack of pride in the racing situation would bring one not to reach their best times because they don't think they can do it. Excess of pride, could lead to starting too fast and then having to slow down later.
I think the quote means that pride can either be positive or negative. If you let yourself become too proud of something it can make you feel superior to others. But (like Kevin said) being proud of something you know you can do can boost your self confidence. I think that what you choose to take pride in has a major affect the outcome. I think a good example of this is Adolph Hilter. He took so much pride in his race that it went to his head and made him believe he was better than everyone else.

ReplyDeleteI think comparing pride to a double-edged sword is a really good way to put it. It can be helpful or hurtful. It all depends on how you choose use it.
I think the quote means that life without pride is useless; life with too much pride is not life at all. It shows how, if you continually look down at people, you will never notice those people above you.
ReplyDeleteThis is very evidently shown in any kind of competition; in my experiences, pride has pervaded math competitions. There are always people who think they are smarter than everyone else and brag about their perfect scores; then a person who no one knows gets first place. The people are shocked and ask, "Who is that?!" The person who came first was not prideful, but he was not "pride-less". He didn't go about boasting his abilities, but he carefully and methodically prepared for the competition. He noticed the people above him, but was not intimidated. Those others had sacrificed their positions in the competition as they would rather boast than prepare.

Your track meet example was great. It really brought out the real world values of people these days. Also, your explanation of why we should always have the perfect amount of pride was very effective. Nervousness is clearly an imperative part of many competitions, but confidence is the real key to success. Obviously overconfidence/having too much pride will mark the downfall of any athlete, of any caliber, and this is clearly shown in myriad situations.
Athletes often make their teams lose because of their own overly prideful behaviors.
I think it means that pride can drive people to do good things (ultimately), but it can also lead to horrible things. Take for instance when the protagonist helped teach his brother how to walk. Aside from the fact that his intentions were selfish, he helped his brother break through his limitations and enjoyed the awesomeness of walking.
ReplyDeleteBut then there is also the fact that he left his brother in the rain, so he could “become stronger”…
So yes, it was exactly like what @Shiv was saying. The two vines represent a negative and a positive path.
Well, outside of the context, I find that I disagree. Pride will always= Negative for me.
In my book, confidence in what you do and pride are two very different things.
For instance, confidence is where you have faith in yourself and your abilities, whereas pride is where you are haughty about your abilities, or abilities that you claim to “have”.
Personally, I used to be one of those people that couldn’t apologize even if the mistake slammed me in the face.

The quote means there are two sides to pride, good or bad. Pride can be good because it can motivate you to succeed, but it also can be a bad thing. Having too much pride can lead to conflicts or situations in the future, including death. These sides of pride relate to the story and our lives.
ReplyDelete@Reba Thomas
ReplyDeleteI agree because some people can be very arrogant and end up failing, but some people have the right amount of pride, and they end up succeeding. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance.
I think that the quote means that you should have pride in yourself, and not try to have pride in others. For example, you should have confidence in yourself so you won't feel nervous and you will strive to succeed. But you shouldn't have too much pride in others so that you will be distracted from your own personal goals.
ReplyDelete@ Ethan Lau
ReplyDeleteI agree because having pride in others can distract you in life. For example in "Scarlet Ibis" the older brother made goals for his brother instead of himself. In the end, the older brothers pride never helped himself, but killed Doodle.
In “The Scarlet Ibis,” the narrator states, "Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death." What do you think this this means? ReplyDelete-On Google Accounts, I am /Other/ gender. xD
Pride can help you pull through, or pull you down as illustrated in "The Scarlet Ibis" where big Brother left Doodle behind, angered by Doodle not fulfilling Brother's pride. However, it was also pride that caused him to try to help Doodle learn other things like swim, run, etc. Pride is dominant in real life not only in your social life, but in our nonsocial lives. -Christopher Hsu, Period 1
I think the quote talks about how a person's life revolves around their pride. Like in the story, the main character wanted Doodle to be normal, and so he wouldn't be seen with a crippled brother. It's very sad and hard to admit but we can all be selfish at times. But too much pride is bad, because you can be so focused on yourself and what you want, not caring for those around you. The right amount of pride is fine, everyone needs to have some pride in something or someone. Even if that someone is themselves. Without pride, we would all be sad and lonely people with nothing to believe in. This is true in real life as well. People always think they are better than someone else, but 'there is always someone better.' I guess it's like your reputation. For example, in school if you are known to have all A's. getting a B on a quiz makes you furious and hurts your pride.
ReplyDeleteChristina Lieng Period 1
First of all, I just want to add that I think the narrator was a selfish and terrible person. Doodle looked up to him and adored him,and that's how he acted, just because he was ashamed of him? Everyone is special, and Doodle was no different.
ReplyDeleteBut as to the quote, I absolutely agree that pride can lead to life, and death. If one takes pride in their accomplishments, they will believe that they have the power to do anything, which can lead them to always strive for the best b/c they know nothing is off limits. Then again, if they always believe they can do anything, this could pose threats to their health and outside life. An excess amount of pride can lead to false illusions, where one believe they can do absolutely anything and becomes prone to infallibility, like the narrator did. The narrator's pride led to Doodle's death....
This does apply to real life...characters who have too much pride almost always end up as social pariahs b/c no one wants to be friends with them.
@ethan lau, I don't really agree with you. Your example about not taking pride in others isn't always true. It doesn't always distract you from personal goals; sometimes, they can cause u to be a better person
ReplyDeletei think that overall pride is a bad thing because it causes people to become selfish. For example i was just watching the movie Anaconda, the 1996 version with ice cube and Owen Wilson, and the weird snake guy almost gets everyone killed because of the pride he wanted from taking the snake.
ReplyDelete@C-rich. Overall pride can be good-it depends on how it is used.

When Doodle was too weak to pick himself up after he fell down, his brother looked down upon him and left him, thus causing Doodle's death; all because of the kid's pride. What is he, in high school?
Side note: I have no clue how Doodle died. Did the lightning learn how to use Volt Tackle and bashed the kid in the neck? Did he get mobbed by the tree? Is the tree really an Ent in disguise?

I agree with you. "a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc." (Dictionary,1). Pride is the state of feeling proud. Pride can cause you to strive for better things. If you were practicing a song on piano as I do many hours a day and someone gave you a compliment as I also receive many times a day, you would feel that moment of ecstasy, be it short or long; it depends on how psychotically challenged you are and how easy it is for you to get "high" on thoughts alone WHICH I am very good at. In that momentary "high" state, you'd be able to do one or more of these things:
-play better
-learn faster
-notice your mistakes and get depressed
-get mad and yell at your hands
-rage quit and throw your music on the floor
-throw your music at the wall
-throw your music up the stairs
-put your music in a shredding machine
In my honest opinion, pride is the key to excelling in everyday actions.
I also disagree with @ethan lau, pride in others can be very helpful and aid in one's pride. For example when a parent takes pride in his/her children's grades, that can boost the child's pride, helping them (the child) succeed. I agree with @Christina Lieng, "the right amount of pride is fine", too much pride and lack of pride can bring negative consequences but the perfect balance is what helps people reach their goals.

I believe that pride is a very delicate mindset.
ReplyDeleteFeeling prideful when accomplishing something is natural for most people. Honestly, when has anyone ever worked hard to reach a long-term goal and not been proud of themselves? But of course, too much pride can cause damage to the beholder and the people around him. When the narrator says that pride bears two vines, I think he means that it can help improve or degrade someone. In Doodle's case, the narrator's pride in himself caused him to force his brother to do something physically impossible.
In my opinion, a person who is prideful in himself and looks down onto others will never reach their maximum potential, but be in denial.
@Shomik Verma
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you statement. In reality, every single person on earth is equal and we should see everyone around us as equals. I have also shared a similar experience during All Region orchestra auditions. The people who made the top group the previous year thought they would be guaranteed a spot again, so they slacked off and didn't practice as much as they should have. Then, when the results were posted, the hard-working seventh graders beat out the eighth graders who were too proud to practice.
To me, the quote means that pride is bad AND good, not just either one. A seed can't grow into two different plants, it only grows into a single type. Pride is like fire and ice. If you think about it, pride only FEELS good, but it never really benefits you at all. Even when you feel proud of yourself when you get an A on your test you may think it's something worth keeping around, but in reality it will probably end up hurting you.(ex: slacking off on the next test) Small doses of pride doesn't do much harm, but small doses can easily grow into a major addiction.

Anyone can turn pride into whatever they choose.
I think it means pride can kill and save. I think it is true outside the story because having pride can harm and be productive to people. It can, like in the Scarlet Ibis, make people feel guilty for doing things for one's self instead of the person you're helping. It can save people from harming themselves because you helped them by helping yourself.

Pride is often what leads alot of people to their downfall. As we get better at what we do, we get more confident, and more prideFUL (if that's a word). However pride is not something we can help, all of us have it, and there's no way we can live without it. Because even though pride brings downfall to alot of people, pride also makes us want to get better at what we do. Now, you might not agree with me, but without pride, there would be nobody that would be really good at what they're doing. And without those people, we wouldn't be where we are today. If you use it to achieve valuable and meaningful goals and uphold the values that you live by, then it is constructive. But, it becomes destructive when you lose sight of it and have too much of it, whereas it becomes damaging to those around you. Example: always thinking that you are right and not admitting defeat. I believe that in society it is true because you can use it to do good deeds and contribute to it. I do not believe it is true in one's life, though. This quote in my opinion is true. Pride is positive and negative. Pride is what brings people up (life) and brings people down (death). This quote does apply to reality like when it comes to dress shopping with a friend. Here's a scenario: You find a dress you want to buy (you basically fell in love with it). You're friend is stressing out because she can't find anything at all. She finds a dress exactly like yours that fits her perfectly and that's the only one she's found all day. You feel awkward because of it and you don't exactly want to match to avoid the awkwardness when you wear it to the same place (ex: homecoming). You do what it takes to find some other dress and try to help her. She likes one of the dresses you gave her and buys it. It's a win-win. But her win was to succeed in your selfish win (to avoid awkwardness). That's basically like in the story when the narrator helps Doodle to walk.
ReplyDelete@Christopher H
I agree with what you said "it was also pride that caused him to try to help Doodle learn other things like swim, run, etc" that is true. He did help Doodle learn things that really benefit Doodle, even though it was for pride. Doodle did benefit.

i believe it means that our pride lets us became who we are and do good but it can destroy us in the process. i also think this is true in society because our pride makes us do things that if we were in our right mind we would find it insane and unbelievable. it can also depend on the type of pride you have it can be good (like wanting to finish something) or bad (like wanting to be the only one to have something even if it can benefit others).
ReplyDelete@Yuxi
i totally agree, but not everyone with pride can put it to the side and judge in an unbiased fashion because pride is like air you know its there but at the same time you don't pay attention to it and it disappears from your mind. yet it can be a good thing that motivates people to strive for more.
also i say pride is more fragile than a scale, its more of a almost shattered glass in the middle of an earth quake even a little touch can shatter it.
(Khuram Mamji-5th Period)
In my opinion, pride varies. This quote reflects exactly how the protagonist is in The Scarlet Ibis, minus the fact that he did it all for himself not for Doodle at all. Everyone has pride whether its bad or good. My little sister has, I don't know, kind of a weird style? All I ever see her wear is like shorts and really weird graphic T-shirts that do not flatter her body at all. I'm kind of embarrassed about what she wears, so I force her to get dressed nicely so my friends won't think that she's some bum girl that just came off the streets. I feel bad for not letting her express herself, but I feel like if she doesn't have guidance now she won't ever. This is a way that pride has effected me in my life.
ReplyDelete@Shelby Stone I agree with what you say about how pride can motivate you to do great things. :)
Pride is a great and horrible thing. Pride can help you to do good things in life. But it can also be just for your benefit. Often times that pride can turn into arrogance. The narrator's pride was for him alone. He didn't really want to help his brother. He only did it because he was embarrassed that this brother had disabilities.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenny Ayroso's scenario. Girls will do that kind of thing a lot. If one girl likes something and their friend likes something similar many time girls will make their friends like something else. =)
This quote means that pride can serve to ones advantage and help raise them up, but can also be extremely detrimental. I think this quote is right because if everything is going wrong, you can still have pride and feel better, but if you have too much pride, it will lead to your own downfall, like in the scarlet ibis when he had so much pride that he only thought of how others would precieve him because of his brother, and eventually, pride got the best of him, and he indirectly caused Doodle's death. After Doodle's death he realized the errors of his ways, but knew that time could never be reversed and he would have to carry that cross throughout his whole life. This is also proven in examples where teens ruin their whole lives with drugs just because they have too much pride and can't stand feeling like less than their friends.

In my opinion, pride is something obviously inevitable. For a while pride can be successful for someone, but if there is too much pride, like the narrator in the Scarlet Ibis, it can ultimately hurt and destroy themselves or the people around them that they love or respect. This quote is also true outside of the story and in our daily lives. For example, I knew a girl who was so proud of herself and had so much pride within her that she wouldn't admit if she made a grade less than a 90. Pride is something that has to be watched and monitored like a VIP patient about to die any second.

@rebecca ward i agree with what you said about the author only helping doodle for his own benefit
ReplyDeleteMy interpretation of this quote is that pride can lead us to do both good and bad things. In The Scarlet Ibis, the narrator teaches Doodle to walk because he is ashamed of having a crippled brother. Although he did it for selfish reasons, it was nevertheless a good deed and helped Doodle. However, Pride can also make you hurt others to benefit yourself, which is cruel. People who can never admit that they are wrong can end up hurting themselves and others around them, but on the other hand, if you don't stand up for yourself, you will never get very far in life. The people who have learned to withhold their pride are the ones who do good deeds just for the sake of helping others without expecting anything in return.

I think the quote means that pride can be useful when needed, whether in bad times or good. Pride can be used for selfishness or others. In the book, Doodle's brother used his pride of selfishess to make Doodle walk. I find this quote to be true in real life. I find it true, because my pride is sometimes lost. Like in biology, when I got my grade for my first test. I felt like the world is going to end, but I felt like it was my fault because I didn't study. I was TOO confident in myself thinking I would do great on the test. Another thing, in my opinion, is that pride has a positive connotation to it so people think it's a good thing, when it sometimes its not in ceratin situations.
ReplyDeleteI think that this quote means that pride can either help you in life or knock you down. Pride can deceive the truth to people. It's like saying an athlete winning his/her game for the first time and never practicing ever again because they think they're good enough. Or a student getting a perfect score on the test and deciding that he is too good to study again fro the next one. Pride can have its pros and cons, but more people see the cons than the pros. Everybody has pride in them whether it's good or bad.

ReplyDeleteIn the Bible, pride is one of the seven deadly sins. As many people have already said, too much pride can be disastrous, and you will end up damaging your "legit" pride (the feeling you get when you achieve something) instead of reinforcing it. For example, if you brag all day long about your basketball skills and you miss every shot in the game, that hurts. Then you have to go through the trouble of making lame excuses:)
ReplyDelete@Shomik Verma
C.S. Lewis also once said, “A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you're looking down, you can't see something that's above you.” This is very similar to what you posted and I completely agree.

ReplyDeleteThe above quote means that pride, the feeling of delight of your achievements in a rather arrogant way, can be both good and bad under the circumstances. That yes, it is crucial part of life because one needs to know when to be proud of themselves and continue the same drive or be so caught up with their self proclaimed importance that they crash and burn instead. Though, in the narrator’s case, I do feel that it wasn’t entirely his fault. The author really never mentioned anyone else in his family. Did he even spend such quality time with his family? Maybe, it was because of that, that he relied on his brother’s love. After all, it was during World War II, where the family was clearly caught up in. And just the fact that his brother was unable to reciprocate the same relationships between other brothers and young boys his age must have took a huge toll. Even though he took his pride to an extreme, we could all truly see where he was coming from.
ReplyDeleteLikewise, outside of the story, this is true as explained above by something like test scores and competitions – that you simply don’t try as hard and expect the same results in the end and is shocked to see that in turn, you didn’t do so well.
Also, I happen to know someone so full of pride that it does consume who they really are -- he'll never admit he's wrong at anything. But he's had a really hard life -- unloved by his family and had to learn to do everything himself. Though, he's so timid most of the time you would hardly know.
The quote means that pride can either have a positive effect or a negative one. Too much pride can ruin you reputation and sometimes your relationship with someone. Too much pride makes you coincided and arrogant. This story is just an example of what pride can do to you. It makes you greedy for others approval. You think of it as a positive thing but others look at you as an mean, arrogant person. So yes, i do agree with what the narrator said about pride. Pride is a wonderful and amazing feeling, but also has a terrible side.

ReplyDeleteYes, your argument over the car was very effective. A lot of times people just buy things to buy friends and social status and what not. However, pride isn't always a thing that you really choose to be. Sometimes it just happens unknowingly, kind of like what happen to the narrator. Throughout the story, he explained that what he was doing was wrong but he continued onward anyway. Pride can be created because of the way you were taught or lived. Not necessarily something you choose willingly.
And if being prideful or prideless were only that easy, everyone would be just peachy.

ReplyDeleteYes, i agree. Too much pride can lead too you being selfish!
Pride can be viewed as both good and bad. there is nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments, but there are also negative ways of being proud. in the Scarlet Ibis, the main charachter would be too emabarassed to have a cripp;ed brother, so he pushes him too far and kills him. he is too proud to admit that his brother would have something wrong with him so he feels the need to prove it.
ReplyDelete@Elsia Gao
ReplyDeletei couldnt agree more. No one ever tries as hard as they could when their prides not at stake
The quote means that a little pride is good to have but too much of it will lead to bad things. I agree with this because too much pride in someone or yourself without any modesty will eventually hurt you or maybe even kill you in the end. However it is good to be have a little pride because it makes people feel good about themselves and their accomplishments.

ReplyDeleteI agree. Everybody should have a little pride in themselves but not too much.
I think the quote means that pride, by itself, leads to the destruction of one who is fattened with it because, as we all know, cockiness will only lead to mistakes that could of otherwise been avoided. Plus, in the social aspect, no one likes to hang around someone who views themselves higher than everyone else. A real life example could be connected to sports or band. If you are good at it and then become prideful and cocky, then you might begin to slack on your work ethic. That will ultimately lead to your downfall. But like the quote also says, it can be a good thing if it is paired with humility. Everyone needs to have pride in themselves, while realizing that there are always people better than you. This is the constructive kind of pride because it can give you motivation to work harder to get better.

@Brendan Ok I agree. Pride is necessary because it can give us motivation and it acts as a force for us to work towards getting better.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the quote means that Pride has both a Positive and Negative aspect. Positive pride can cause people to have increased self confidence, but if they have too much self confidence they can cause harm to other people as in The Scarlet Ibis when the narrator causes Doodle to go pass his limits and die. The positive and negative aspects can be clearly be seen in daily life.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, this quote means that pride can be good or bad. Pride is good, it can encourage you to do more than you normally would. But too much pride can be dangerous. In "The Scarlet Ibis", the narrator had too much pride and didn't want to be made fun of because of his little brother. He ignored the fact that Doodle couldn't walk and pushed him everyday to at least try. Because of his pride, Doodle was able to walk. But because he had too much pride, he kept running instead of waiting for his weak little brother. I think that the quote is true out of the context of the story, but not in such an extreme way. Today, pride allows us to acknowledge our achievements and feel accomplished. But it is still true that if one has too much pride, they may create more unnecessary conflicts.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about too much or too little pride preventing someone from living their lives. this is both true in The Scarlet Ibis and in other scenarios. good job! :)
This quote means that pride can be used to help some one, or to hurt them. Pride determines who you are, and how far you are willing to go to defend your self and what you believe in. However, to much pride can be detrimental to what you are trying to accomplish. Some may be trying to help you, but your pride will get in your way and not allow them to. This quote is true outside of the story because everybody knows someone who will go to any extent to prove what they believe in is right, and somebody who will never allow anyone to help them.

I feel that people who have pride arent bad people. I know people who have pride in what they do and they're some of the nicest people i know. Its not bad to have pride in what you do, but it can be used in bad ways like in the Scarlet Ibis he had too much pride to actually stop and realize the signs of pushing Doodle too hard which led him to keep pushing himself when he didn't have to in that extent. He wasn't trying to help Doodle he really wanted to protect his pride.

I think that this quote means that pride can have good and bad effects on people. Having pride can sometimes help you acomplish goals and work harder. There is nothing wrong with that, but having too much pride could cause you to be unable to live a happy life if you're constantly worrying on what people might think of you.
ReplyDelete@Robert Yuan
I agree with you because I feel pride in myself when I work on something for a really long time, and finish it. But having too much pride like the narrator in "the scarlet ibis", made him hurt his brother when he failed in doing something he thought he could do.

I believe that the quote means that pride can be different things for different people, sometimes even at different times. There is one point in someone's life where pride can sometimes bring out the worst in you, and there are some times where pride can make you seem like you are better than people think you are. For example, if you were to show pride in the work that you do through that work when everyone is under the impression that you hate it, then that brings out the "good vine" of pride. This metaphor definitely brings out the good and the bad in people and actions.
ReplyDelete@Rishi

BUWHAHAH!100th....well, this quote means that its okies to have pride, but dont get carried away with it. for example, its good to have pride because it can push you to reach for the things you want. the sad part is, when you you have too much pride, then you would become selfish lost concern for others. and yes, i do believe that this quote can be applied to life not just in the story :3

Pride isn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on how the person controls their pride. In the story, the narrator directs his pride into a negative aspect, and is too stubborn toward his brother, eventually killing him. In real life, pride being both negative and positive is true, because pride can make a person feel good about themselves, but too much pride could lead to pushing yourself too hard because you have higher standards for yourself.

A lot of people here are saying that pride is a good thing to have, but too much of it is bad. isnt that the case for almost everything? i think that too much of anything is never good...
ReplyDeleteI think pride is an element, a way of life, which holds two meanings. Its almost as if it wears two masks. it is the force that drives you to reach your goals.. a motive, a pot of gold waiting to be indulged in at the end of a rainbow...
It actually depends on the person who sustains tht pride within them. it depends on how they use it. for better; or for worse. you know, once you start working hard in order to achieve that pride and once you actually get it, it all seems like such a wonderful thing. This is when success and greediness comes into play.
pride can mean standing up for something, doing what you belive in. and pride can also have a negative connotation and mean that you are selfish and full of yourself and have an egotisitc personality.
it is basically up to the person whether he/she wants to use that pride in a good way... or a bad way... it is up to them to choose one of the 2 vines....

having too much pride in yourslef can lead you to an illusion that you are perfect. there are many people out there who think they are perfect.. but if they were perfect... they wouldnt be human .. right?? this image of being perfect and this utopion world in peoples' heads... ufff.. its just a BIG misconception. nothing real.. nothing true.. because life is given to us so we can learn and improve.. and if we were made perdect and prideful then there would be no point of living ...
ReplyDeletetoo much pride can mislead you into la la land .. and no pride at all just kills you.. and disourages you and makes you feel insecure. which is bad too.. because everyone is special in their own way.
pride = ego
pride = confidence
confidence is good. ego is bad. in my head, these are the two vines which pride bears..
I think pride is a necessary evil. It's what drives people to do certain things. At the same time, though, if you let it get out of control, it could result in the worst of things.
ReplyDelete@Mahnoor Khan
ReplyDeleteI like your view on the vines of pride as ego and confidence. Pride is needed when talking about confidence but when it gets too far it becomes ego. Normally when we talk about ego, its a bad thing. Like when people get too cocky and cause people to dislike them.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Mahnoor Khan when she says that to much pride can lead to an illusion that you are perfect, and that no human can ever be perfect. She made really good examples of pride, by saying that the two vines which pride bears can be confidence or ego. Her comment really made me think about the different meanings of pride, and what kind of pride the narrator had in the story.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Pride can be dangerous and sometimes good. I like how you said "pride is shown in people who refuse to cry even though they want to, pride is in those who refuse to give up". And that is true in the real life. When we don't get it right the first time, we don't give up, we keep on trying.
Pride definitely has a good side, as most people only understand that part of it. To be proud of something such as an achievement is something that should be looked upon as rightful, since pride is part of their reward. However, the reason you're proud of something and the different people involved in the situation can change pride from a healthy reward into a selfish desire. It can all be summarized into the idea that a person's intention is of great importance when judging one's pride as either just or selfish.

Haha I agree with your first paragraph because I felt the exact same way throughout reading the whole story. Doodle treated the narrator as a true younger sibling should treat their older sibling; respectfully. Along with that he truly looked up to him. The whole time I was appalled at how vain and cruel the narrator would be. But, it added to the effect the ending had on me.
i believe that pride has two kinds. the good side deals with how confident you are in yourself while the bad side deals with how cocky you are. if you are too prideful, you will have conflict with others around you. Pride in a good way can help you with some obstacles like in orchestra when you are trying out for region
ReplyDeleteI believe that pride is a man with two faces; one that is good, and one that is terrible. Having too much pride is a bad thing and can make you cocky, therefore other people will not like you. However, if you have too little pride it can be bad as well. It can lead to insecurities and you might be too doubtful to do something. Having pride in yourself is a good thing, it can help you out like when you try out for something, or you do something you've never done before.
ReplyDelete@Shiv Pandya
ReplyDeleteI agree with you statement about pride; it can affect you in many ways if you have an overabundance or a meager amount.
